A study of UK shoppers has revealed a lack of personal style confidence in over 65s. The research, undertaken by Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet, also revealed a preference for high street shopping for Brits, rising confidence in personal style among the young, and a growing nostalgia for fashion from decades past.

When asked to rank personal style on a scale from one to ten, those taking part in the research gave themselves an average score of five. Over 65s were the least self-assured in their fashion sense scoring just 4/10 on average.

Gen Zs aged 18-24 were significantly more confident in their ability to create a stylish outfit and scoring themselves a far higher average of seven.

Respondents said that on average they had developed their personal style by the age of just 25.

To combat this lack of confidence on the part of older people, the designer outlet has shared style tips inspired by the looks of five big-name celebrities over 65:

Dame Helen Mirren

Invest in one show-stopping accessory. Dame Helen anchors her outfits with a bold piece that immediately elevates a simple base and becomes your signature conversation starter.

Dame Judi Dench

Master the art of neutrals. Dame Judi’s style is rooted in neutrals and tonal dressing such as dove-grey suiting, cappuccino knitwear, finished with a luxe leather loafer or silk scarf.

Prue Leith

Let colour be your confidence catalyst. Add one vivid hue to every outfit. From berry-red blazers to turquoise trousers, Prue’s playful use of colour transforms her day-to-day look.

Dame Mary Berry

Learn how to dress for comfort by choosing elevated “off-duty” pieces. Think cashmere joggers and silk-blend knit cardigans paired with statement jewellery.

Oprah Winfrey

Embrace tailoring that flatters your shape. A classic wrap coat or high-waist pencil skirt can be flattering choices.

Why do people prefer to shop in person?

The same research also showed that despite the rise of e-commerce, 64 per cent of respondents said they prefer shopping in person.

Leading reasons include the ability to try items on, judge quality in person, and avoid delivery issues.

While older shoppers were most passionate about this preference, even among younger consumers, the in-store experience remained important

Some over 65s are also taking to social media to share their fashion tips including one digital creator who has taken to Instagram to share her fashion, style and beauty wisdom with over 29,000 followers.
