The Best Vintage Straight Leg Jeans of 2025 (With Sizing & Styling Tips)
A few years ago, I tried on a pair of Levi’s 501 classic straight leg jeans for the first time and immediately took them off with a hard nope. Too stiff, too boxy, and just…not it. But recently, after realizing I wanted that go-to, vintage-y pair of jeans as a fresh option to all my baggier styles, I gave them another shot. And this time? I get it.
Turns out, Levi’s 501 jeans are more than just classic, they might actually be the best vintage-style jeans of 2025. It just took me a while to see it.

Levi’s 501 Jeans Review: The Best Vintage Straight Leg Jeans of 2025 (With Sizing & Styling Tips)
When I first pulled on a pair of Levi’s 501 straight jeans, it was just after having a baby, freshly postpartum. Jeans were still daringly slim for the most part, but I was being pulled, quite dramatically, towards all the looser styles sneaking into the denim sections. Baggier jeans were so different and cool at the time, not to mention, a LOT easier on a soft tummy (and raging hormones).
The tighter, narrow fit of 501s felt so bad, you can practically hear how uncomfortable I was in these photos below (LOL).

This was also a time when longer jeans were entering the scene, and as someone measuring at 5’10” the idea of having a true full-length jean was exhilarating – making me despise the cropped nature of 501s even more.
Fast forward and it’s been multiple years of enjoying longer, looser styles, and as one does, I’ve begun searching once again for some unique silhouettes to add back into the rotation. After exhausting the few slimmers pairs I still had in my wardrobe (my longtime go-to pair from Agolde has been giving me a shapeless, skater-boi-bum after just one wear, and even the 501 90’s have felt too baggy for what I’ve been wanting), I ordered a handful of new straight leg jeans to try and was floored when I found myself loving the classic Levi’s 501s.

Levi’s 501 Sizing & Fit Guide (For Tall Women)
My first go around with these jeans I went with a size up from my regular, mostly because I had just had a baby. But even then, I didn’t like how a bigger size fit in these 99% cotton (1% elastane) denim. I don’t have anything to speak for in a bum or waistline, so instead of a cool-girl-loose fit, sizing up just makes my jeans feel extra frumpy.
I highly recommend going with your true size and sticking it out the first wear or two until the jeans break in around your body. Even though they aren’t 100% rigid cotton denim, the fit is still phenomenally better in the long run once it molds to your specific curves. With these, I don’t have to worry about that bagged-out bum even after multiple wears between washes.

As someone on the taller end of the spectrum, these jeans just work if going for an ankle crop look (not full length). Unfortunately, Levi’s brand as a whole doesn’t exactly cater to those who need longer inseams. You can go up a 32″ inseam on Levi’s website directly, which does help a little (I’m wearing the 30″ for reference!).
For a similar fit with more inclusive options, try Gap’s High Rise 90’s Straight Jeans (so many washes, multiple inseams). However, it is definitely worth noting that Levi’s now makes a “501 Curve” which is the same beloved jean redesigned for an hourglass figure!
How to Style Levi’s 501 Jeans in 2025
I don’t subscribe to the traditional notion of having to balance out your outfits, whether in shape or even colors chosen (ie: the sandwich method). Doing so can take creativity, and most importantly, comfort out of the act of getting dressed. But a classic straight leg jean actually does provide endless options for tops.

With no dramatic waistline, no loose fabric or boisterous shapes (as you get with a horseshoe jean), your tops aren’t running into anything that might affect the way they fall and fit around the middle of your body. You can wear anything from boxy cropped tops to dramatically long tunic tops or oversized hoodies and they will lay comfortably.

You won’t have to think twice about needing to primp or tuck or fuss to make things flow together.

I find shoes to be the most problematic, mostly because of my height and where 501’s stop on my legs. For me, a minimal clog, flat, or sandal that shows my ankle is what I like best. I will also pull on my tall Hunter boots or fave cowgirl boots with a wide opening, but I tend to skip any midrise boots that would hit around my ankle bone or even lower calf. I also only reach for sneakers that I can lace up without socks.

Where to Buy Levi’s 501 Jeans
While skinny jeans have become near obsolete for many years, and it’s only a matter of time before our low & loose styles fade out once again, a straight leg as classic as 501s has proven to hold steady throughout all the changing trends. They’re not too tight, and they’re not too loose (as Goldilocks would say, they’re juuuust right).
