Walk the Walk: a Q&A with Nigel Barker | Culture

Each fall, New Orleans Fashion Week promises engaging conversations and activations for the region’s most fashionable set to attend. This year, renowned photographer and TV personality Nigel Barker will make his debut on Monday, September 15, at Longue Vue House & Gardens for a special conversation titled Through the Lens.

Nigel brings 35 years of unique fashion perspective starting with his time as a model walking the runways in London, Milan, Paris, and New York. He later transitioned to behind the lens as a photographer before collaborating with Tyra Banks and Naomi Campbell on shows like America’s Next Top Model and The Face.

During the discussion, Nigel will explore fashion as both an art form and a thriving business ecosystem while also offering attendees interesting pathways available in the industry’s expansive landscape. “This isn’t just a talk about fashion — it’s an invitation to reimagine your creative potential and discover how your unique vision can contribute to fashion’s ever-evolving narrative,” he shares. “Come ready to be inspired, challenged, and equipped with the knowledge to turn your passion into purpose.”

And while this is Nigel’s first NOFW, he is no stranger to New Orleans. “The South has always held a special place in my heart, and New Orleans sits like a jewel at its center. My wife Cristen hails from Fairhope, Alabama, which has given us countless opportunities over the years to discover this magical city. Whether we’re flying in or taking the scenic route by car to visit her family and friends, New Orleans has become our treasured waystation — a place where we instinctively know to slow down, breathe deeply, and let the city’s intoxicating rhythm wash over us.”

Tickets to Through the Lens can be purchased here. Learn more about Nigel below in a special Q&A with The Pearl.

Q: What is your relationship to New Orleans?

There’s something almost ritualistic about our stops here: the inevitable pilgrimage to Café du Monde for those cloud-like beignets dusted with enough powdered sugar to coat half the French Quarter, the ceremonial Hurricane (or two) that seems to unlock the city’s secrets, and always — always — a soul-warming bowl of gumbo that tastes like generations of stories stirred together in one perfect spoon.

But this visit promises something entirely different and thrilling. I’m captivated by the prospect of witnessing how New Orleans’ extraordinary cultural tapestry — its layers of Creole elegance, jazz-born spontaneity, carnival extravagance, and deep-rooted storytelling tradition — will manifest on the runway during Fashion Week. How do designers translate the whispered histories of wrought-iron balconies into fabric? How does the sultry improvisation of a saxophone solo become the drape of a dress? How do the vibrant second-line parades inspire color palettes that dance down the catwalk?

I’m eager to see the soul of this city — so rich with music, mystique, and memory — come alive through the creative vision of designers who call this place home. There’s magic in the air here, and I suspect it’s about to be woven into wearable art.

Q: How has fashion photography changed since you started?

Oh, where do I even begin? The transformation has been nothing short of revolutionary!

Picture this: I started my journey as a wide-eyed high schooler, armed with nothing but passion and a medium format film camera that felt like wielding a piece of magic. For my first decade in the industry, film wasn’t just my medium — it was my entire world. Every shot was precious, every frame calculated, because you couldn’t just “delete and try again.” I remember the alchemy of the darkroom, the intoxicating smell of developer, the thrill of watching an image slowly emerge in the fixer bath. Some of us were true artisans, processing and printing our own work by hand, crafting each photograph like a master craftsman.

I’ll never forget working on America’s Next Top Model when we got our hands on one of Mamiya’s first digital cameras for the Garden of Eden shoot. It felt like stepping into the future — equal parts exciting and terrifying! But here’s the thing: it’s not just about the gear evolution from film grain to pixels. The entire ecosystem has been completely reimagined. The models, the aesthetic sensibilities, the advertising landscapes, the very platforms where fashion lives and breathes — everything has morphed into something almost unrecognizable from my early days. Back then, we were part of an exclusive club. There were just a handful of us wielding those hefty film cameras, and you had to really know your craft — understanding light ratios, film stocks, chemistry, the whole nine yards. We were photographers in the truest sense, masters of both the technical and artistic sides of our craft.

Then came the digital revolution, and suddenly the gates flew wide open. Now, practically everyone on the planet has access to photography through their phones, and platforms like Instagram and TikTok have democratized visual storytelling in ways we never could have imagined. It’s simultaneously thrilling and overwhelming — watching an art form that was once so exclusive become the universal language of our time. The competition isn’t just expanded; it’s exploded into a million beautiful, chaotic fragments. And honestly? I wouldn’t have it any other way. The evolution keeps us all on our toes, constantly pushing boundaries and redefining what fashion photography can be.

Q: What is your advice to anyone looking to break into the fashion industry?

As we always emphasized on Top Model, the golden rule remains unchanged: develop your signature style. This isn’t just advice — it’s your survival kit in an industry that thrives on the extraordinary. Think of fashion as a crowded room where everyone’s shouting. The only way to be heard? Have something genuinely unique to say. Your signature style isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s your creative DNA, your visual fingerprint that makes casting directors, editors, and industry insiders stop scrolling and start paying attention.

But here’s the thing — having a distinctive look is only half the battle. You need to cultivate a strong point of view. Fashion isn’t just about pretty pictures; it’s about storytelling, cultural commentary, and pushing boundaries. What’s your take on sustainability? How do you interpret emerging trends? What conversations are you starting, not just joining? Speaking of conversations, staying plugged into the zeitgeist isn’t optional — it’s essential. Fashion moves at lightning speed, and relevance is currency. Whether it’s understanding TikTok’s influence on runway trends, recognizing how street style is reshaping luxury fashion, or knowing which emerging designers are about to explode, you need to have your finger firmly on the pulse of what’s happening now, not what was cool last season. The industry rewards those who don’t just follow trends but anticipate and help create them. So develop your signature, sharpen your perspective, and stay impossibly current. In fashion, being unforgettable isn’t just an advantage — it’s everything.

Q: Any current trends that you are loving or hating right now?

I’d describe myself as more of a cultural anthropologist than a critic when it comes to trends. I don’t need to personally love something to find it absolutely fascinating — fashion is this incredible language of expression where spontaneity and freedom collide to create something entirely new. What I find endlessly captivating is fashion’s beautiful circularity. We’re constantly witnessing this dance between past and present, where silhouettes and concepts resurface like old friends with new stories to tell. A 70s blazer isn’t just revived — it’s reimagined with innovative sustainable fabrics, deconstructed in unexpected ways, or styled with a completely fresh attitude that speaks to today’s cultural moment.

The business itself is this living, breathing cycle where nothing truly disappears — it just hibernates until the right moment, the right materials, or the right cultural shift brings it back to life. And that’s where the magic happens: in those subtle tweaks, the new textiles, the clever design innovations that make something feel both nostalgically familiar and thrillingly contemporary. Fashion is ultimately about giving people the tools to tell their own stories. Whether a trend resonates with me personally becomes secondary to appreciating the creativity, craftsmanship, and cultural commentary it represents. That observer’s lens allows me to appreciate the artistry in everything from avant-garde runway pieces to the way someone styles a vintage find with modern accessories.

Q: What inspired you to launch your own ready-to-serve Espresso Martini last year?

Throughout my career, I’ve been driven by an insatiable creative curiosity — refusing to be confined to any single lane and reveling in the artistic process, regardless of medium. I’ve drawn tremendous inspiration from trailblazers like Cindy Crawford, Elle Macpherson, and Tyra Banks, who masterfully transcended their industries to build empires spanning cosmetics, furniture design, and television. Their entrepreneurial fearlessness lit a fire in me to do the same.

The Espresso Martini is, quite simply, the supermodel of cocktails — the most effortlessly chic and fashionable libation of our era. Its origin story reads like something out of a glamorous novel: picture a mysterious supermodel sauntering into Harry’s Bar in London during the late 1980s, approaching the legendary bartender Dick Bradsell with an irresistible request: “I want a drink that will wake me up and mess me up.” And thus, cocktail history was made. But here’s the thing — while the Espresso Martini may be devastatingly stylish, it’s notoriously difficult to execute flawlessly. You need to be part bartender, part barista, and completely obsessed with perfection. The sheer number of recipes, opinions on flavor profiles, and coffee preferences can make your head spin faster than a cocktail shaker.

So I embarked on a two-year odyssey with my brilliant partner Philippe Roederer, collaborating with some of the world’s most celebrated mixologists to create what I boldly call the gold standard. Our masterpiece features 100% Colombian espresso coffee, six-times-distilled vodka, and caramelized brown sugar, bottled at 40 proof — because this is a real cocktail, not some diluted pretender.

The genius lies in the simplicity: every complex element has been perfectly pre-balanced, requiring nothing more than ice, a vigorous shake, and voilà — absolute perfection in a glass. My mission? To democratize this legendary cocktail, making it accessible to everyone, everywhere, at any time. Because exceptional taste shouldn’t be held hostage by geography or bartending skills.
