We’ve all faced the same fashion dilemma at least once in our lives.
Sometimes, we open up our full wardrobes and struggle to find anything to wear, declaring we “hate” all our clothes.Either we’re over the designs, the fit’s not right, or it all just feels wrong.
So, what do you do? A leading fashion expert and stylist has weighed in.
Former fashion editor Brooke Falvey, who was voted Australian Style Institute’s Stylist of the Year in 2020, urges style enthusiasts to “take a deep breath” before taking steps to streamline your wardrobe.
“Try to determine where that feeling is coming from. Is it that your style or lifestyle has changed, or is there just too much noise and clutter?” she tells nine.com.au.
“We often become overwhelmed by our wardrobes because we have too many clothes and no direction.”
She says this can lead us to develop “decision fatigue”.

Falvey says culling your wardrobe at this point is a good idea.
“You want to think about the pieces and outfits you wear repeatedly and build more looks around those,” she says.
“And look for items that will wash and wear well, and can be used with different layering pieces or accessories to make them feel fresh.”
Interestingly, she says turning to social media is also a good idea if you’re stuck on what to wear.
“If you’ve got pieces you love but you only ever wear them one way, jump online and look for inspiration on ways to mix things up,” says Falvey, who boasts more than 96,000 followers on Instagram.
“Pinterest, Instagram and TikTok are great for this.”
She expains that one of her Pinterest searches, for example, will be something like “red slip skirt outfit summer” and she’s never disappointed.

Falvey’s advice comes after Westfield Queensland stylist Mia Elizabeth revealed the materials you should you look out for on fabric labels while shopping.
“I lean towards natural fibres like cotton, linen, wool, and silk – they’re more breathable, feel better on the skin, and are usually more comfortable in our climate, especially during the warmer months,” she said.
“However synthetics can be really practical when blended in, especially if they help with holding the shape or reducing creasing.

“A cotton-poly mix or a wool blend with a bit of acrylic can give you that balance between comfort and durability, and they’re often a lot easier to care for too.”
Mia said she tries to opt for “100 per cent cotton” T-shirts and basics when shopping and one of her go-to stores for that is Uniqlo.
