The annual horse race, held the first Saturday in May, this year on May 3, is the oldest continuously held sporting event in the country. This year marks the 151st Kentucky Derby held at the historic Churchill Downs Racetrack, 700 Central Ave., and, as has been the tradition for more than a century, it’s the one day of the year when the outfits are as important as the sport.
To be fair, the entire week of racing at the track is a fashion parade with everything from straw hats and flashy neckwear to sports coats and bright spring colors leading the way.
For this reason, we visited another historic Louisville landmark for this year’s men’s Kentucky Derby Day fashion primer.

Home to five generations of legal scholars who defined and defended bourbon as we know it today, it made the perfect backdrop to show off the best of men’s fashion for this year’s Kentucky Derby season.
Whether you’re watching the most exciting two minutes in sports at Churchill Downs or at a festive Kentucky Derby party anywhere in the country, a few stylish items can turn a so-so ensemble into a sure bet. Fashion expert Jo Ross has a spectacular track record for dressing men for the races. She offers up some winning tips using fashions from Von Maur as you start to pull together your outfit for this year’s event.
2025 Kentucky Derby outfit ideas for men
There is a feeling of whimsy in the air on Derby Day and guys, you’ll want to rise to the occasion. Remember that you aren’t dressing for the office or a football game, you’re headed to a garden party with mint juleps, horse racing and friends.
“Kentucky Derby season is a festive time in Louisville and people pull out all the stops when it comes to their fashion,” Ross told the Courier Journal. “If there’s ever a time to sport pastels, it’s the Derby. Think pink, pale blue, lavender and mint.”
To give you an idea of how splashy fashion can get at Churchill Downs, Ross dressed models Lorenzo Mauldin and Peter Abat in current styles while accenting the look with accessories we’re likely to see on Derby Day.
That’s right, a raspberry-sprinkled ivory sports coat, a lavender fedora and a hand-painted equestrian themed tie, paired with a floral patterned mint green sport coat and a button down collared shirt with bejeweled buttons, would feel over-the-top at a board meeting but this look is right on the mark at the Kentucky Derby.
Kentucky Derby men’s outfits include seersucker, navy and preppy touches
If a purple suit jacket or a sparkly dress shirt are a bit too much, you can always fall back on the tried and true Southern charm of seersucker or the preppy feel of a solid colored sports coat.
Most of the best Kentucky Derby outfits for men have had their roots in preppy style. A single or double-breasted navy suit or sports jacket paired with a light-colored shirt is a smart choice. But keep in mind, this is the Kentucky Derby and there is no need to be stodgy.
“This is Derby time and you want to add elements that are splashy and fun,” said Ross. “You’ll see men adding exuberant color and pattern to the traditional navy suit with a bold-colored bow tie or a patterned necktie, pocket square, lapel pin, light-colored trousers, and a smart pair of saddle shoes.”
Another staple at the racetrack, seersucker has been a favorite for decades. Made from a lightweight fabric that comes in traditional light blue and white or pink, mint green, navy, tan, and even lavender and white, seersucker is comfortable and stylish on a warm spring day. Add a touch of whimsy when you pair seersucker with a bright bow tie and pocket square for a pop of color.
When it comes to shopping, if you’d rather keep some cash for betting on the ponies instead of buying a new ensemble, add to what you already own with a “preppy” patterned necktie, bowtie, pocket square, fabric boutonniere or button down shirt. Gingham, stripes, florals, and equestrian patterns are also popular on race day.
Do men wear hats and accessories to the Kentucky Derby?
You bet men wear hats at the Kentucky Derby. While not as ornate as what women will be wearing, men’s hats for the Kentucky Derby include a classic straw Panama-style, fedora, pork pie, or a narrow-brimmed trilby.
