Lea Michele chats cleaning tips and minimalist design
You may have heard that Lea Michele is busily preparing for a starring stint in the Broadway musical Chess, but the actor and parent of two young kids is also gearing up for another major event: back-to-school season. With that on the table, Lea has partnered with Lysol for their ‘SOMO’ (Sick of Missing Out) campaign, in conjunction with the HERE for Healthy Schools initiative, which teaches parents simple ways to help stop the spread of germs and help keep their family protected.
‘I think that there are the standard things on our list as they should be, like the new backpack and pencils and lunchboxes and things like that,’ Lea tells us from her hotel in New York City. ‘But it’s also so important to remember to stock up on the items in your home, such as Lysol disinfectant wipes, and Lysol disinfectant spray, to help prevent the spread of germs in your home so that your children can stay healthy and not miss out on those special moments throughout the year.’
Lea says her favorite cleaning products are the disinfectant spray and disinfecting wipes, but she tells us she also loves the laundry sanitizer, so it’s no surprise that keeping a tidy home is a top priority for her.

‘My motto and the way that I’ve always felt is, I can’t predict what’s going to happen in a day and what my day is going to be like, but I can keep my home centered and clean and grounded,’ she explains. ‘Something as simple as making sure that when I leave the house, all of my dishes are going to just be in the dishwasher and that they’re not going to be sitting in my sink, especially working on Broadway. I come home super late at night, and it’s hard to come home at midnight and then have to be cleaning and doing dishes. And I make my bed every single day.’
Her affinity for tidiness translates to her interior design sensibilities, which she describes as ‘neutral, minimal, and organized.’ However, she likes to personalize her space with sentimental objects.
‘When you walk into my house, I have two framed pictures of art that my son did when he was two,’ she tells us. ‘It’s just splattered paint. But my husband and I know that he made that, and it’s special to us. Other than those little touches here and there, my house is very simple and very minimal and very beige.’
She tells us that she is looking to invest in wallpaper to add some warmth and texture to her space, but in the past, she has been more adventurous with interior design – that is, in her dressing room.
‘When I did Funny Girl, my last show, I wanted my dressing room to have a completely different vibe from my house,’ she explains. ‘So I painted the walls a dark, royal blue. I had a velvet couch, and everything was dark and rich. I wanted it to feel like Fanny Brice was singing at a nightclub.’
Her current dressing room for Chess however, features home comforts, from her design choices to her accessories (she tells us her must-haves include a couch, a humidifier, an air purifier, and a tea kettle).
‘For this show, I actually want it to just feel like an extension of my house,’ she explains. ‘So I want it to also be bright and clean and minimal to feel like it’s my home away from home.’
