Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nikolay Mikheev. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Nikolay, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?

When I’m in need of inspiration, I try to surround myself with it, it could be some art works, a movie, a book, etc. The more you immerse yourself in what inspires you, the more your mind will start generating ideas. Collaborations with other creatives also play an important role. Finding the right creative team is crucial; stylists, models, makeup artists, inspiring locations, are the keys to the success of almost any fashion editorial photoshoot.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I work as a fashion and a jewelry photographer. The exciting part of fashion photography is that it allows you to blur the lines between art and commerce — each shoot is a chance to craft something visually striking and unique. Regarding jewelry photography, I found it challenging at some point, it’s detail-oriented, and technically demanding. If you love attention to detail and controlled environments, jewelry photography is deeply rewarding. It’s less chaotic than fashion and more meditative in its process.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

My graphic design background made a big impact on developing qualities that are crucial for a photographer, such as visual and artistic sense, understanding of composition, color, and lighting. Sense of beauty — like a creative compass which helps to make visual choices based on my tastes and experiences. Developing these qualities is foundational for anyone working in creative fields, from photography and design to illustration, film, or fashion. Just observing the world around you could be beneficial in this process. Pay attention to shapes and lines, light and shadow, analyze works by classic and contemporary artists.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

Feeling overwhelmed is completely normal, especially when you’re juggling creative work, deadlines, expectations, or personal stress. My advice is to pause, go for a walk or meditate. Prioritize, simplify, and be kind to yourself, often feeling overwhelmed it’s a signal that you need rest.
