Resale fashion shop to open its first CT location this week

A resale fashion shop is opening its first store in Connecticut this week.

Yale University Properties is hosting a grand opening Oct. 12 for 2nd STREET at The Shops at Yale, according to a release. The ribbon cutting will be at 9:45 a.m. at the store’s new two-floor shop at 272 Elm St.

Since opening its first American store in Los Angeles in 2018, 2nd STREET has expanded to nearly 40 stores in the U.S., according to the release. “From streetwear to vintage to Japanese designer apparel and luxury accessories, 2nd STREET’s vast assortment of premium and unique second-hand items for women and men resonates with stylish, eco-conscious customers seeking environmentally friendly alternatives.”

2nd STREET buys and sells apparel along with a mix of inventory from the U.S. and Japan. Its parent company, GEO Holdings, founded the original 2nd STREET in 1996 in Japan, which now has 700 stores, according to the release.

“We feel fortunate to have found a retail space among such great brands including lululemon, Apple, and Warby Parker, in a diverse and welcoming city on the move,” said Wakasa Mizuno, 2nd STREET marketing officer, in a statement. “New Haven offers the ideal combination of a dynamic retail environment and a rich cultural scene that aligns with our brand’s values. The city’s thriving, fashion-forward population makes it the perfect backdrop for 2nd STREET’s first step into the Connecticut market. We look forward to being a part of this community and contributing to its continued growth and excitement.”

Next act for major, but struggling CT mall: ‘Shoppertainment?’

Community members are invited to bring their gently used fashion items to be evaluated for resale during a special grand opening buying event from Saturday, Oct. 12 through Sunday, Oct. 20, according to the release. Sellers will receive an additional 20 percent in cash above the amount they would normally receive for the duration of the event.

Complimentary parking for the ribbon cutting will be available at 150 York St. Garage, with a validation stamp at The Shops at Yale tent on Broadway Island, directly across the street from 2nd STREET.

Alexandra Daum, associate vice president for New Haven affairs and University Properties, highlighted the rising trend of sustainable fashion in New Haven, according to a release.

“We are fortunate 2nd STREET chose New Haven and The Shops at Yale for its first location in Connecticut. 2nd STREET’s value and eco-conscious options will appeal to a broad demographic, including New Haven residents, the student population and customers living outside of New Haven. I’m thrilled with this major new addition to the New Haven retail landscape,” said Daum.
