Style tips for women over 40: Fashion expert reveals the best investment pieces for women over 40, the top places to shop and how to do trends | Exclusive Interview

“Honestly, I think women over 40 are some of the most stylish people ever,” stylist Mia Elizabeth tells 9honey.

We couldn’t agree more.

Celebrities including Anne Hathaway, Khloé and Kim Kardashian and Sienna Miller never set a foot wrong on the red carpet – and they’re all in their forties!

The Devil Wears Prada star Hathaway, 42, once hit the nail on the head when she told Women’s Wear Daily of becoming the face of Versace, “It’s something I’m very proud of for a lot of different reasons.

“I am very excited to work for a company that wants to have 40-year-old woman as their face. And by the way, 40 years old does not have to be the ceiling.”

There’s no denying our fashion, style and tastes can change and evolve as we get older – maybe even our budget, too – and sometimes there might be some new trends we want to try but don’t know how to or have the confidence to.

Mind you, some people just rock them!

There’s also so many places to shop these days both in store and online, and it can be overwhelming.

Speaking with 9honey Style, Westfield Queensland fashion stylist Mia Elizabeth has revealed some of the best investment pieces women over 40 should have in their wardrobes, and her take on trends and where to shop.

Mia’s top picks for the wardrobe of women in their forties includes a “clean and flattering” black dress, and items including a blazer and leather handbag.

“I’d say a good blazer, tailored trousers, a classic coat, decent denim, a beautiful leather handbag, a silk or crisp cotton blouse or shirt, and comfy shoes that still look stylish,” she says.

“Most women over 40 I have worked with are ditching the heels are going for flats or a lower, block heel.”

She said brands including Dissh, Witchery, AJE, Sportscraft and Palm Noosa are some of her top places to shop (for any age, really).

If you have a bigger budget, “Camilla and Marc is sleek and amazing if you’re ready to invest,” Mia says, while “Alémais is super fun, while still being really comfortable”.

When it comes to trends, Mia says to not be scared of them and tells fashion-goers to weave them into their wardrobe and “layer them over your classics”.

“Don’t feel boxed in by age, style has nothing to do with age,” she says.

But she tells women not to “hide under oversized clothes if they’re not doing you any favours”.

So, ladies, don’t be shy.

”I actually think most women don’t really find their style until they’re in their mid to late 30s and early 40s, anyway,” Mia says.

Mia says there’s a certain confidence that comes with maturing when it comes to your wardrobe.

“You’ve done all the trial and error in your 20s and early 30s, and by now you kinda know what works, what feels good, and more importantly, what you can’t be bothered with.”

However, she did say “some women hit 40 and start dressing way older than they need to”.
